The Food Safety Act 1990 was introduced to ensure Food supplied to members of the public is fit for human consumption.  It covers activities from Primary Production, through to distribution in retail and catering.

The Food Safety Act works together with the General Food Regulations 2004 to provide penalties for those who breach the requirements of the Food Safety Act.

Environmental Health Officers were provided with enforcement powers in 2006 (Food Hygiene Regulations) to provide non complying businesses with penalties such as Hygiene Improvment Notices or Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notices.

Due to such legislation, Correct Instruction, Appropriate Training and Constant Supervision is essential.
